EXAMPLES OF TYPICAL SESSIONS
Banking - a major California bank needed to agree on what to focus on for growth. This was accomplished in a 2 day process. Day 1 identified and prioritized which customer needs were important and which were being well met by the bank. Day 2 completed the process by developing an action list for how to meet key customer needs. Recommendations were accepted by and incorporated into a company-wide strategic plan.
Biotechnology - a rapidly growing pharmaceutical company had conflicting objectives at the senior manager level resulting in morale problems and attrition. In a series of individual manager interviews the issues were clarified and significant common objectives (overlap) were defined. The resulting report increased the stake holder "buy-in", helped accelerate key time to market and reduced key employee attrition.
Energy - a 40-person sales and marketing team needed to come to consensus about compensation plan. This 1-day retreat achieved a company wide compensation plan that all parties agreed to, understood and bought into. This closed an issue that was open for a year and minimized the time out of the field for these producers.
Healthcare Administration - senior management needed to prioritize their ability to address risks. This became a multi-day process of centralizing hospital-wide risk assessment. Areas included compliance, finance, operations and public relations. The resulting risk-assessment profile identified the top 20 risks, and assigned them to specific managers for resolution. The hospitals have been using Topper Facilitation for a decade. Over time the time to achieve this process has been reduced by 90%.
Higher Education - in all of these fields the common objective is to have people work better together towards a common goal. Specific examples include:
Practical and Strategic Planning - half-day retreats for single- or multi-departmental projects.
Risk Assessment - a series of 2-hour sessions to identify, prioritize and mitigate university exposure.
Market Research for External and Internal Customers - focus groups to influence and validate goals.
Business Process Improvement - increase output with existing resources.
Insurance - a 120 person start-up found they had more than goals than they could achieve. On a 1.5 day retreat they were able to reduce their goals by 75% and achieve consensus. This eliminated a source of chronic resource conflicts.
Information Technologies - an organization needed to rapidly create an efficient means of capturing requirements from dozens of different types of internal clients. This process identified areas common to a majority of the "clients" and allocated resources accordingly. The process also created a method of identifying, prioritizing and satisfying requirements unique to one or a few internal "clients". Four half-day retreats, with varying participants achieved this goal. This methodology will be refined and repeated annually.
